100 Club Draw - March

The 100 Club draw for March took place at the Pavilion on 31 March. Sue Woodhouse is the lucky winner of £50.00, being the owner of number 58 which, because of the current circumstances, was drawn out by Karen Eaton in front of a witness, Mike Smith.

Friendly Match against Waterlooville
This match was played at Waterlooville on Sunday, 8 March 2020. We played 3 rinks and 3 triples as Waterlooville only has 6 rinks. Linda and Peter, who are members of the Waterlooville Bowls Club, made us feel most welcome, and we all had a great time and a good laugh – until we started bowling!!! Seriously, we all had a good time and had some close matches. Tea was planned for us after 16 ends but, due to a very heavy shower, we all had to run for cover so had tea after 6 ends.

This was our very first outdoor away match since we opened in April 2019. Thanks to all the players who turned out for Clanfield and played very well for such a new club. You can all hold your heads up high as most of the Waterlooville players have been bowling for years and we’ve only been bowling for 10 months!!

Results
Phil, Teresa, Debbie and Mike                 17-16     A win for Clanfield

Alan, Tracey, Carol and Barry                 16-19     Very close match
Howard, Nuala and Bob                          9-16      Another close one
Michael T, Diana and Geeti                     6-16
Mick B, Wendy and Mike R                     5-26
Gaynor, Ian, John S and Ed McGrath       6-34

A few of us had problems trying to get out afterwards – Michael T thought he was going out but entered the shed and someone else ended up in the tennis courts!! Nuala thought she knew where she was going when she headed for her car but ended up walking round Jubilee Park in search of it. Such Fun!

Friendly Match against Palmerston, Fareham
This was our first away match and, for most of us, the first one indoors! Hospitality was amazing and the president made us feel very welcome. All Palmerston team members made us feel at home and helped us throughout. The experience was wonderful, food was delicious and a raffle was arranged as well.

Results:
Peter, Linda and Byron         18-14

Nuala, Alan and Sue             12-17
Debbie, Phil and Mike           17-21
Wendy, David and Gaynor     6-38
Howard, Tracey and Jo         11-33
Teresa, Mick and Mike          5-30

As the scores show, there was 1 win and some close matches which was a great result as 80% of our bowlers have never played indoors before. Everyone did their best and came away with heads held high. A special thanks to Phil Malin who stepped up to be our Captain for the day and did an excellent job.

2020 AGM
Our first AGM was held on 26 February 2020 and was attended by 49 trustees, committee members and members. Michael Trippick, our Chairman & Club Secretary, welcomed everyone and introduced Graham Withers, Finance & Legal, who presented the Club accounts for 2018-19 and the current accounts for 2019-2020 as they stood on 14 February 2020. Graham also presented a number of changes that the Management Committee recommended are made to the Constitution and Club Rules.

Michael then gave his report during which he described the milestones and achievements, our bowls programme and the range of leisure activities of 2019-20. He then covered our plans for 2020-21 and the challenges we expect to face. This was followed by the election of the Management Committee and a question and answer session. As a finale, Michael showed a video which gave a bird's eye view of the Club and surrounding area and to round off the evening light refreshments were served.

See MINUTES for full details. If any member would like a copy of the minutes, the attendee and apologies list and the accounts please let Geeti Granger know (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Rabbie Burns Rollup

It was a bleak Scottish mist that settled on the rinks at Clanfield as we prepared for RABBIE BURNS Roll Up yesterday morning (25/1).

15 players turned up and all had a great time, until we started bowling!!

Our first game was to bowl nearest to the little Scottish teddy.  The winner was Brian McFoster!

The games were competitive and very close although it was a tad wee cold! (Thank goodness kilts were optional!!!)

Welcomed by all was cock-a-leekie/scotch broth and tomato soup with warm rolls.

It was our first fun roll up of 2020.

I would like to give a special thank you to Ian Oldfield who set up the rinks, and Kathy Trippick and Jo Lougher for their invaluable help in the kitchen plus great support from Byron and Joce.

Friendly Match against Waterlooville
Clanfield BSC hosted their 5th friendly match on Wednesday 6 November 2019 against Waterlooville. For the first time since we opened in April 2019 we had play on all 8 rinks. It was a great sight to see 56 bowlers playing in a really friendly way.

18 ends were played with a welcome break for tea and biscuits and a chance to warm up a bit half way through. You could hear the laughter and feel the fun rippling through the gentle rolling hills of Clanfield!

I would like to thank Waterlooville for helping us to relax and making the match fun.

As you can imagine it was a lot to organise and could not have run smoothly without the help of the following:

Mike and Glenda Smith, Kathy Trippick, Jo Lougher, Barry O’Leary, Neil and Brenda Morgan, Carol and Barry Carter, Tracey and Howard Wilkins, Alan Dickinson & Peter and Linda McWilliams (Waterlooville)

Final result: Waterlooville   184    Clanfield    81
(Clanfield won 2 rinks)
The score belies a closely fought battle against Waterloo...Ville!!

As Waterlooville have years of experience and we only have months I think everyone who took part should be congratulated on a very respectable performance.

 2/11/2019 100 Club Draw - October
The draw was made at Saturday's Quiz Night by one of the quizzers but, unfortunately, the number drawn has not been purchased so the unclaimed £50 will be added to November’s draw making the total prize for the winning number at the end of this month £100!

 2/11/2019 Quiz Night
We had another well attended and fun Quiz Night on Saturday 2nd November with a couple of music rounds well put together by one of our Members, Tony Glover. Those rounds were particularly enjoyable so thanks to Tony for that. We will have him back! There was a slight downside to the evening as it was actually too “well attended” as we had more people turn up than I was informed about and therefore planning for. The result was that, although the atmosphere is great when the Pavilion is so full, it was fairly cramped and warm. So, for future quizzes, I will limit the capacity to 55 and I will make it a ‘ticket only’ event - which I've been trying to avoid so far. With the Christmas party coming up there’s unlikely to be a Quiz Night in December but we will plan one for mid-January after we’ve recovered from Christmas and New Year.

 28/10/2019 Halloween Roll Up
The Pavilion was decorated for Halloween and we held a roll up in the afternoon. Many bowlers entered into the 'spirit' of the day coming in masks or with painted faces so we all started the afternoon in 'high spirits' !!

Our triples winning team was Tom Costello, Michael Trippick and Diana Pickford.

The best mask competition was won by Alan Dickinson.

We finished the afternoon with tea/coffee and some very tasty spookey cakes!!

100 Club Draw - September's Winner
Congratulations to Martyn Scott who won the September 100 Club prize of £50! His number 43 was drawn by a member of the audience at the Jacuzzi Jazz gig so all was ’above board’smile

Months one and two have gone so there are now ten draws to go in this '100 Club Year'. There are still a few numbers left so if you want to buy and own one (or more) this month to be in the next ten draws they are available in the Pavilion for £10 each.
Don't forget that if a number is chosen which has not been purchased the following month's prize will be doubled to £100.

Friendly Match against Rogate
As the rain didn't pass over as early as forecast the afternoon wasn't looking very promising but we weren't to be daunted...we decided to have our refreshments before we started to play!

Although, after waiting for about 45 minutes, the green was still very wet and bowling was going to be difficult our visitors from Rogate agreed to go ahead with the match. This was a great decision as the whole afternoon was an experience which has taught us all a lot about handling different bowling conditions and, despite the on-off rain showers, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

We are very grateful to our visitors for agreeing to play and giving us a great match. It is one that will go down as one of our Club's milestones - we won the overall match 66-38smile

Finally, I would like to thank the ‘Twilighters’ for my card and gifts that I was presented with after the "prize giving". Great surprise.

First Friendly Matches against Portchester and Cowplain
After practising and playing bowls for 4-5 months we held our VERY first friendly matches this week.

The first was against Portchester on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we lost but it was a great experience for us. I am missing one score card so, as yet, can't give you the result.

On Saturday we played Cowplain and the weather was stunning – and the bowling almost matched it!! Clanfield actually won 1 match! Overall, we lost 57 points to 82 but what a result!!

Our winning team was:
Steve Puttock, Michelle Upfield & Barry Carter who won 15-13.

Well done everyone who took part in these matches.

Remember practise exudes confidence!

Diggers!
I just want to say a big thanks to you for sparing your time and energy today to remove the "tatty turf". It already looks sooo much better and our Wendy is already figuring out how to make those manhole covers look a tad more colourful. The "man(persons) of the match" awards go to:

  • Nigel and Heather for masterminding the whole show and working so hard
  • Kathy & Glenda for keeping everyone fuelled with bacon butties and beverages. Superb!

Thanks all.

Twilight Roll Up
At our regular weekly Twilight Roll Up on Friday, 26 July 2019, we had our best attendance to date. 26 members rolled up, bowled up then drank up in the bar enjoying sangria and pinot fruity cocktails. A number of spectators also enjoyed watching the action and, of course, the after-bowls drinks.

It was a great, laughter-filled evening with some bowls thrown in!
